BP is making a major donation in jet fuel during the coronavirus pandemic and some of it is coming from its Cherry Point refinery near Ferndale.
The company announced through a news release that it is donating a total of 3 million gallons of jet fuel to FedEx and Alaska Airlines. The 2.5 million gallon jet fuel donation from Cherry Point will go to the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport; 1 million gallons will go to Alaska Airlines, while 1.5 million gallons will go to FedEx. The remaining 500,000 gallon donation is coming from BP’s refinery in Whiting, Indiana.
Alaska Airlines is stepping up to restore air service to several remote Alaska communities recently cut off after a local carrier declared bankruptcy, according to BP’s news release. The donated fuel will help Alaska Airlines to activate its response in support of the supply chain, delivering food, medical supplies, mail and emergency passenger services.
The airline that filed for bankruptcy is RavnAir, which operated RavnAir Alaska, PenAir and RavnAir Connect. The company plans to liquidate its assets after canceling all flights earlier this month, according to Alaska Public Media.
