June 5, 2020
In this series, Dr. Howard Glazer looks at products that can help practices during these challenging times. Here he reviews TheraCal PT from Bisco, Inc., a product that aims to deliver fast-acting pain relief.

Editor's note: In an effort to keep you informed of products that can help dental practices during the COVID-19 pandemic, Dental Economics columnist Howard Glazer, DDS, FAGD, has authored a special multipart series. In each installment, he reviews a product that can assist you during this challenging time.

TheraCal PT

Need to provide quick, long-lasting relief? TheraCal PT (pulpal treatment) may be the answer. TheraCal PT is ideal for pediatric
emergencies as it is a resin-modified calcium trisilicate specifically designed for pulpotomy treatment through protection for the dental pulpal complex. While primarily for pulpotomies (both partial and full pulpal removal), it is a viscous product and can also be used for direct pulp capping and as a base/liner. Please note that hemostasis should be achieved prior to usage.

TheraCal PT particles are synthetic calcium silicate in a hydrophilic matrix that facilitates calcium release. The product is in an automix, two-barrel syringe and is radiopaque, dual-cured, and moisture tolerant (low water solubility); it releases calcium and maintains an alkaline pH. Working time is about 45 seconds and the product will set in less than five minutes, at which time you can immediately restore the tooth. The product shade is a somewhat opaque A1, but you will undoubtedly cover it with a regular composite resin. It is safe to use with disinfectants, desensitizers, hemostatic, and wetting agents, but you must use a saline rinse if you are combining chlorohexidine and sodium hypochlorite.

A wonderful addition to the Thera product line, TheraCal PT is a handy, easy-to-use product to treat adult and pediatric patients alike.
