Cabling Blog: ICT infrastructure ramping on all horizons

The ethos of future-proofing legacy cabling infrastructure for LANs has now been deemed "a godsend for CIOs."

In a recent article for Intelligent CIO Europe, AROONA product line manager Kevin Lengle, Ph.D, of Cailabs, discusses why a "disruptive technology" mindset regarding multimode fiber is now of great benefit for campuses both academic and corporate, as it enables the gradual and flexible evolution of the local network’s optical infrastructure without the operational and cost constraints of new cable deployment.

In the article, Lengle seeks to dispel myths about the capacity limitations of multimode fiber, which makes up most campus backbones.

Keith Larson of Control did the research and has declared Ethernet-APL technology "ready for prime time."

Larson's August article charts how, "with specifications and engineering guidelines available, plus conformance test plans in motion, products that bring a two-wire, intrinsically safe physical layer to the field" are now increasingly entering the market.

In news related to this observation, Siemon's Brian Baum recently submitted this related blog describing best deployment practices for his company's "existing proven and standards-based solution for Single-Pair Ethernet (SPE)" technology.

Siemon says its TERA SPE solution with fully-shielded cable offers superior noise immunity, virtually zero emissions and "so much transmission headroom that field testing is not required for guaranteed support of 10BASE-T1L cabling systems with reach up to 400 meters."

With mechanical reliability in high temperature environments up to 75°C (167 °F) and all components rated for current capacity up to 2 amps, the company notes the system also supports reliable delivery of DC power via IEEE 802.3 power over data line (PoDL) remote powering technology.

If you've ever wondered about the potential for smart heating systems facilitated via IoT technology and heating cables, CR - Construction Review Online has a write-up for you.

"Heating systems have played key roles in a number of commercial and residential settings for applications such as melting snow, ground heating, pipe maintenance, and frost protection, especially in colder countries since the industrial revolution," notes CR's senior research consultant Shambhu Nath Jha, who adds, "Recent years have witnessed significant increases in research and development processes, with IoT environments generating potential for value addition, especially for integration into architecture aimed towards smart city projects."

Never forget: The ICT cabling and connectivity beat is a global undertaking. 'It's unprecedented' - As reported by The Cable (Africa), the federal government of Nigeria announced that the company's information and communication technology (ICT) sector contributed a record 17.92 percent to the nation’s gross domestic product (GDP) in the second quarter of 2021, compared to 14.91 percent in Q1 2021 and 17.83 percent in the previous year.

Isa Pantami, the government's minister of communications and digital economy, disclosed the figures earlier this month at the unveiling of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) strategic vision plan for 2021-2025. Pantami, who represented Nigeria's President Muhammadu Buhari, claimed the record is “unprecedented” in the history of Nigeria.
