Baker Hughes: US rig count up 14 units to 813

The US drilling rig count increased 14 units, reaching 813 rigs working for the week ended Dec. 20, according to Baker Hughes data. The count is up after numerous weeks of decreases, but still down 267 units from this time a year ago.

The US drilling rig count increased 14 units, reaching 813 rigs working for the week ended Dec. 20, according to Baker Hughes data. The count is up after numerous weeks of decreases, but still down 267 units from the 1080 rigs working this time a year ago.

The number of rigs drilling on increased by 12 units week-over-week to a total of 788 units. The number of rigs drilling in inland waters increased by a single rig—the only rig drilling in inland waters for the week. The number of rigs drilling offshore increased by a 1 unit to 24.

US oil-directed rigs increased by 18 from last week to reach 685 units. This time a year ago, 883 units were drilling for oil. Rigs targeting gas decreased by 4 units to reach 125 rigs, which was 72 fewer than were drilling for gas at this time a year ago.

Among the major oil and gas-producing states, Texas saw the largest jump in rigs. With 418 rigs running, the count is 18 more than were drilling last week.

Louisiana gained 2 rigs for the week to reach 58 rigs running.

New Mexico and Oklahoma both gained a single rig to reach 103 and 51 rigs running, respectively.

Five states remained unchanged this week, namely Colorado, 22; West Virginia 16; Ohio, 11; Alaska, 6; and Utah, 4.

Pennsylvania and Kansas each dropped a single rig to reach 24 and 0 rigs running, respectively.

With two fewer rigs, Wyoming ended the week with 25 rigs running.

Canada’s rig count decreased by 4 units for the week. At 149 rigs, the count is 18 more than the 131 units drilling this week a year ago. With 88 rigs drilling, Canada’s oil-directed rigs dropped 8 units this week. Gas-directed rigs in Canada increased by 4 units to reach 61.
