The US drilling rig count fell 5 units, reaching 279 rigs working for the week ended June 12, according to Baker Hughes data. The count is down 690 units from the 969 rigs working this time a year ago.

The US drilling rig count fell 5 units, reaching 279 rigs working for the week ended June 12, according to Baker Hughes data. The count is down 690 units from the 969 rigs working this time a year ago.

The number of rigs drilling on land dropped 5 units week-over-week to a total of 266 units. The number of rigs drilling in inland waters was unchanged at 0 units for the week. The number of rigs drilling offshore was unchanged at 13.

US oil-directed rigs decreased by 7 from last week to reach 199 units. This time a year ago, 788 units were drilling for oil. Rigs targeting gas increased by 2 units to reach 78 rigs, 103 fewer than were drilling for gas at this time a year ago.

A notable change among the major oil and gas-producing states—with a 2-unit increase, Pennsylvania ended the week with 22 working rigs.

New Mexico and West Virginia each dropped 2 rigs for the week to land at 56 and 6 rigs working, respectively. Rig counts in Texas, North Dakota, and Oklahoma dropped by one to 114, 11, and 10 rigs running, respectively.

Seven states remained unchanged this week, namely Louisiana, 34; Ohio, 9; Colorado, 6; California, 4; Alaska, 3; Wyoming, 1; and Utah, 0.

Canada’s rig count remained unchanged for the week. At 21 rigs, the count is 86 fewer than the 107 units drilling this week a year ago. With 7 rigs drilling, Canada’s oil-directed rigs remained unchanged for the week. Gas-directed rigs in Canada were unchanged at 14.
