The US dropped a rig for the week ended Feb. 17, according to Baker Hughes data. The decrease puts the total number of rigs running at 760, still 115 more than the 645 units drilling this week a year ago.
Gas-directed rigs in the US increased by 1 to a total of 151, helping to offset the 2-unit oil rig decline. There were 607 rigs drilling for oil this week.
There was one fewer rig drilling offshore, bringing that total to 17. Rigs drilling in inland waters were unchanged at 2 units. Rigs drilling on land also were unchanged from last week at 741 units.
Horizontal drilling rigs were unchanged at 700. Directional drilling rigs decreased 1 unit to reach 42. Vertical drilling rigs were unchanged at 18 this week.
The rig count in Canada fell by 2 units to 248 rigs working during the week. There were 220 rigs running this week a year ago.
There was a 2-unit increase in oil rigs to 163 and a 4-unit loss in gas rigs to 85.
Major states
There were two rig additions in the major oil and gas-producing states. Oklahoma and Wyoming each adding a rig to reach 64 and 18 rigs running, respectively.
Louisiana saw 2 fewer units working this week. The state’s count ended the week at 64 rigs.
Two states were down a single unit this week, namely New Mexico, 108; and Colorado, 18.
