    Wind turbine installation under way at TPC Changhua offshore Taiwan

    Jan De Nul Group’s jackup vessel Taillevent has installed the first turbine for the Taiwan Power Co.’s Changhua Phase 1 offshore wind farm project.

    The 140-m (459-ft) long jackup vessel Taillevent is equipped with six spuds, an onboard crane with a lifting capacity of 1,000 metric tons (1,102 tons), and an auxiliary crane of 50 metric tons (50 tons).

    LUXEMBOURG – Jan De Nul Group’s jackup vessel Taillevent has installed the first turbine for the Taiwan Power Co.’s (TPC) Changhua Phase 1 offshore wind farm project.

    With the first wind turbine installation completed, the project team will proceed with the commissioning process, along with the final termination of the subsea cable inside the tower.

    Located 8 km (5 mi) offshore western Taiwan, the wind farm will comprise of 21 5.2-MW turbines, each installed on a jacket with transition piece and anchored to the seabed by four steel pin piles.

    According to Jan De Nul, the wind turbine installation campaign has suffered delays due to restrictions and new regulations implemented by authorities in Taiwan and around the globe as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

    Consortium partner Hitachi Ltd. is in charge of manufacturing, assembly, installation, and other works related to the offshore wind turbines with downwind rotor. The company pioneered this design by obtaining the Wind Turbine Class T certification, an international standard on wind-resistant design recognizing the need in regions subject to frequent typhoons.
