Baker Hughes: US rig count up 2 units to 440

The US drilling rig count increased by 2 units to reach 440 rigs working for the week ended Apr. 30, according to Baker Hughes data. The count is up 32 units from the 408 rigs working this time a year ago.

The number of rigs drilling on land was unchanged week-over-week with a total of 426. The number of rigs drilling offshore increased by 2 units to 13.

US oil-directed rigs were down 1 rig from last week at 342 units. This time a year ago, 343 units were drilling for oil. Rigs targeting gas were increased by 2 units to 96, 15 more than were drilling for gas at this time a year ago.

Of the major oil and gas-producing states, Louisiana saw the largest increase. A 2-rig increase brought the rig count to 49 for the week.

Texas gained a single rig to reach 212 rigs running for the week.

New Mexico dropped a single rig to reach 70 rigs running.

Ten states remained unchanged this week, namely Oklahoma, 21; Pennsylvania, 18; North Dakota 15; West Virginia, 11; Colorado, 10; Ohio, 10; Utah, 8; California, 7; Wyoming, 4; and Alaska, 3.

Canada’s rig count decreased by 4 units to 51 rigs drilling for the week. The count is 24 more than the 27 units drilling this week a year ago. At 20 units, Canada’s oil-directed rig count is up 3 units for the week. The gas-directed rig count in Canada is down 7 units to 31.
