Nokia, Vodafone envision 70 Tbps per data center fiber, post-1 Tbps channel demo

Sept. 20, 2021
A recent demonstration conducted by Nokia and Vodafone Turkey suggests the ability to increase network capacity to 70 Tbps per fiber.

Nokia says it partnered with Vodafone Turkey to demonstrate a 1-Tbps per channel coherent transmission over the latter’s live fiber network. The partners say the demonstration suggests the ability to increase network capacity to 70 Tbps per fiber.

The 1-Tbps was transmitted across 130-GHz bandwidth without errors on Vodafone Turkey’s in-service optical network between data centers. The route benefited from Nokia’s wavelength routing technology, including a non-blocking CDC-F ROADM optical switch architecture and support of C+L band transmission.

Equipment used included the Nokia 1830 PSI-M (Photonic Service Interconnect-Modular) compact modular optical networking platform optimized for data center interconnect applications and equipped with the company’s PSE coherent optics.

“At Vodafone Turkey, we are committed to using next generation technology to provide the most convenient services to our customers – uninterrupted and reliably,” commented Thibaud Rerolle, CTO at Vodafone Turkey.

Rerolle continued, “Our fiber-optic backbone is an important step on the way to 5G and, with Nokia, we continue to equip our optical network with the latest technologies and innovations for our services today and in the future."

The demonstration took place within the context of an ongoing modernization effort of Vodafone Turkey’s optical network architecture. The two companies earlier announced the demonstration of a 1-Tbps clear channel transmission via router interfaces as part of the same effort.
