Rig counts slip in US, jump in Canada

This week there were 675 rotary rigs working in the US and its waters and 187 working in Canada. A year ago, the numbers were 756 and 191, respectively.

Of the rigs working in the US and its waters this week, 537 were drilling for oil and 133 were drilling for gas. There were 652 rigs on land, 5 in inland waters, and 18 offshore. In Canada, 114 rigs were drilling for oil, up 3 from last week. Rigs drilling for gas in Canada increased by 9 to reach 73.

Of the major US producing states, Texas saw the largest decrease in rigs the week of July 14, with 329 rigs running, 8 less than the previous week. New Mexico’s rig count increased by 2 to reach 113 units working. Louisiana’s rig count increased by 1 unit this week to reach 51.

Texas’s count is 36 fewer than were drilling this time a year ago. Oklahoma’s rig count fell by a single rig to hit 39 rigs working this week. North Dakota’s count rose by 1 to reach 35.
